With Leap Day coming up on February 29th, it hit us that we didn’t really know much about it, so we decided to do some digging on the background of Leap Days.
We came across some pretty interesting information, and thought we’d share what we found with you:
-Leap Day ensures our calendar aligns with the Earth’s orbit around the sun. If we didn’t have Leap Day, our calendars would be off by an additional six or so hours every year. After four years without a Leap Day, we’d be off by an entire year!
-Julius Caesar introduced the first leap year around 46 B.C., after being advised by Sosigenes (an Alexandrian astronomer). It was later fine-tuned by Pope Gregory XIII to prevent too many leap years.
-Those born on February 29th, known as “leaplings,” celebrate their birthdays on Feb. 28th or March 1st in non-leap years. The odds of being a leapling? One in 1,461!
-The twin cities of Anthony, Texas, and Anthony, New Mexico, celebrate big with a festival for leap year babies!
-The Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies is a global club for leaplings, promoting Leap Day awareness.
This special day doesn’t come around every year (literally!), so we hope you can take some time on February 29th to celebrate the novelty of this bonus day.
